The Right to Assemble.....Peacefully

Since the end of May, the entire country has been going through one of the most important and dividing movements our nation has ever seen. Although the Black Lives Matter movement isnt new, it has been brough back into the spotlight after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That week brought carnage upon the city, Target stores were looted, and small businesses were burned. This was immediately backed up by many as “the right to assemble”, and although protesting is what this country was founded on, the freedom was written with a very important word, peacefully. As a citizen of this country you have every right to stand up and speak out against what ever you want. Protesting and changing is how we grow as a nation, its how we make ourselves better and move on from the past.

Although this example in Minnesota is not the case in every city in america,  many cities such as Atlanta, Georgia have seen looting and civil unrest occur. During June a man by the name of Rayshard Brooks was killed after a routine stop with local Atlanta PD. Brooks was taking a field sobriety test when he attempted to run from police officer Garrett Rolfe. After bringing Brooks to the ground, Brooks grabbed the officers Taser leaving Rolfe with no line of protection against the subject at question. As Brooks ran away from the police Rolfe then shot him in the back, killing him in the parking lot of the local Wendys. Locals took to the streets the next day to protest the killing of Brooks. This led to them blocking the interstate and burning down the Wendys he was shot at.

Protesting peacfully is one of the greatest parts about this nation but burning down a Wendys and blocking other Civilians from their regular transportation is not covered under that first amendment. Demonstrators should be arrested for actions such as these, that is not a protest, that is Arson.
