The Highest Court in the Land

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court within our country. No one and absolutely no one is above the law of the land and the Supreme Court upholds those laws. The court system is made up of three separate levels. Between the District courts and Circuits courts, all cases must go through those levels before being presented to the 9 justices in Washington DC. Justices are appointed by the President in the office. Justices are much different than any other political office. They serve life terms. Once they are sworn into office they will serve in that seat until they are unable to physically. Because of this, the average age of justices is 67. The oldest member of the current of the Court is 87-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Although this set of justices are fairly young compared to previous terms.

The Court system has played an instrumental part in the development of our nation. They serve to give equal justice for every citizen of this land. Although some cases are small many of the cases are household names as they have changed the outlook of the country. Brown v. Board was the 1954 landmark case that desegregated public schools. Thus establishing the “separate but equal” was not equal at all. Cases such as these have sparked the civil rights movement and helped shape this country into what it is now.
